Romeo's summer vacation

Greetings Patty, hope all is well with you and your babes....Romeo was on a 2 month adventure up near Superior WI he had a blast he went birding and fishing swam in the lake,( he has to learn to keep his big butt down under not let it come to the top like a huge ole bobber!!!) He saw the deer in the back yard and behaved himself.... He really has come a long way with his manners he still is very close with Dick and still throws fits if he's left behind but gets over it quickly..we have some issues with the word come he can be a little hard headed but it's worked on constantly.

Thank you again for Romeo my pain in the butt no longer (he stopped butt biting!!!!) I will send updated pictures he has changed so much he filled in quite a bit we had to buy another collar he's quite a big boy kisses from all. Take care Love Dick Nancy and Romeo

A spoiled little Boy---letter from "home"

Patty-- we can't thank you enough for Romeo he's such a sweetheart he's fitting in just fine with the others and the cat we took quite a few pictures of him and I'll be sending them to you shortly. He's so exhausted from all the chasing and playing he falls over and takes a nap wherever he lands, he surely is a kind hearted little guy thank you for trusting us with him. He's learned to sit in the couple of days he's been here and boy when there's a treat to go with he sits quickly and just waits. He adores Dick and goes wherever he goes, if he goes in the bathroom or downstairs he sits and cries until he comes back the bond is really growing between them and for this I am also very grateful (the other 2 dogs are too close to me) they have a true friend in each other.

Today Monday after work we went to Petco and he got to pick out treats and toys he wanted $150.00 later he has his own toys and Science Diet and of course some treats (Thank God I didn't have to pay for what he ate out of the bins!!) My parents met him on Sunday and my mom who's not so keen on dogs fell in love with him she said hey if you don't want him I think I could have him we did tell her about Wheaties but I know she likes her cats too much to be a dog person. I had to take a picture of them together he fell asleep with his head on her lap, she of course was thrilled to death she wouldn't move everytime someone walked in the room she shhhhd them so he wouldn't wake up and remain sleeping by her......so I guess he's a real keeper. THANK you again for all the time and effort you put into him.

Love, Nancy Dick and Romeo

Romeo is adopted!

Romeo is howling for joy! He's just been told he's found his forever family---or rather they've found him.

A kiss goodbye for foster mom Patty, who's got a hard time letting this one go.

Patty reported later:
Nancy called me Saturday afternoon to let me know that Romeo was settling into his new home nicely. As we were speaking, he was chasing his new Daschaund brother around the sofa and coffee table and had already met the cat in the bathroom and decided that his breath was too awful to be bothered with (Nancy says that the cat is very old). His sister was out in the yard with Dad ignoring him, but she thought that she would warm up to him quickly. About that time the phone went dead and after a few minutes I was able to get her back. Evidently, Romeo had grabbed the phone cord and headed down the hallway with it. I guess he thought it was time for mom to get off the phone and play.
Nancy promised to send photos and keep me posted as they all settle in. It was a little quiet at my house Sunday morning at 3 AM without my early morning walk in the backyard with Romeo, and all of my kids keep checking his crate to see where he is, but we are happy that he is somewhere that he will be loved.

Romeo is stealing hearts...

Now that Romeo got rid of the puppy competition at his foster home (Wheaties and Jersey girl have moved on...)
...he's sure a smart little boy.
...and is living up to his name...
...as rumor has it...
...that his foster mommy is absolutely smitten with him.

Update on the pointer pups!

While the puppies were in temporary foster care, we already received some great updates on them from their foster mom Patty: Gidget-went to a temporary foster home all by herself and we'll have an update on her shortly
Jersey Girl- This girl has attitude. She knows that she is just beautiful. I think more of her personality will come out now that Cleo has left us because Cleo was head puppy. She loves nyla bones and throws it up in the air and plays with it more than chewing on it. I am teaching her that I am not a chew toy.
Romeo - We have been playing fetch with an old sock and he is really good at it. Actually, all you have to say to him is that he is a good boy and he will do most anything you want. I really don't know how anyone could leave him in the woods - he whines a little every time that you get out of his sight. He is a great fetch player and even gives it to you pretty easily when you say "hand". I tell him what a good boy he is when he picks it up and he just prances over to show me. We also went in and out and in and out last night on the long lead. He stays really close and walks well on the lead - no pulling. Last night he was at the landing of the stairs and I went on down and over by the pups and I was not in view. He waited for a short time and then came looking for me. The reaction from him when he found me was wonderful. He crouched down and danced on his front paws, then ran up and got petted.
Wheaties - This boy can be a little bull headed, but he knows how to make up with you quickly. He wants to be top puppy, but Cleo has kept him in line. He will play tug og war with his sisters, but the girls usually win. He is also learning "no" in addition to "down". Jersey Girl and Wheaties will be undergoing eye surgery to correct a condition called Cherry Eye. Any donations to help with the surgery are greatly appreciated!

Last night we played in the yard until about 9 pm. We went inside and outside and inside and outside for over an hour and they are starting to catch on to the poddy outside program. Jersey is learning a little slower than Wheaties. We are also learning "No" which means no jumping, no chewing on foster mom's arm or fingers etc., they both follow me everywhere and are starting to come when called. They both will sit to be petted, but we do need to practice sitting for any length of time. They both are playing with new rope toys and basically just being juveniles. There is already a difference in their overall appearance from Saturday. They are filling in a little bit and don't look like skinny puppies with fat bellies.

I have been rubbing their paws with the plan of clipping their nails toward the end of the week. So far, everyone is liking baths, foot rubs and the play sessions that we have on the blanket. All three of them follow me around outside, but I have a 25 foot lead that I'm using just to be safe. With the weather improving, we will be able to spend more time outdoors and I will work with them on walking on the leash and we are starting to teach "sit".

I really want to thank you for the opportunity to have these wonderful babies come into my life. You really can not imagine the joy that they have brought me the past few days.

Patty
Cleo will head out to Michigan, together with Freckles, as fellow rescue group "Pointers from Oz" will take them into their fold.Freckles is the sweetest and most loving little girl. When you lie on the floor with her, she covers her eyes with her paws like little hands and lets you rub her belly for as long as you will do it. Cleo is more impish and independent, but she has to be with her siblings grabbing her tail and ears all the time. When she cocks her head a looks at you her ears stand up and you will give her whatever toy you have.

Pointers in Urgent Need of Foster Homes!

These cute pointers are in desperate need of rescue!

Here is what the local rescue organization could tell us: "They do look to be pure bred pointer or a mostly pointer mix. They were picked up abandoned in the Olivet KS state park wildlife area. We have temporarily housed them with our vet clinic in Emporia KS. We have had them fecal checked/wormed as of today. Two of them have a cherry eye condition, and they are all in an emaciated state right now. I do not have a foster home I can move them to, and if I cannot obtain a commitment from another rescue organization soon I will be forced to make the decision to have them put down. I do not have a budget for extended boarding while waiting to get into foster homes.

If anyone is interested or able to take on any new pets, all of these pups are extremely friendly with no signs of aggression whatsoever on initial intake. Myself and one of our other board members would be willing to transport to another rescue if anyone can meet us halfway. We are also willing to get a first set of vaccinations in them as well, with a heartworm test on the one adult. The other five are puppies, maybe 6-7 months old??"

Illinois Birddog Rescue can only help these dogs if we have foster homes that will take these pups in! Please contact Lisa immediately, if you can help. Email address is: lisaspakowski@rcn.com
